Echo

(2015)
Music Theater

Enduring hardship, hunger, and thirst, travelers throughout history have nonetheless been captivated by the breathtaking landscapes of the Silk Road. These vivid, storied lands bore witness to — and inspired — the rich exchange of Eastern and Western cultures. Across these sweeping vistas, religions, arts, and the traditions of many peoples flowed, mingled, and transformed one another.

Echo is a reflection of that vast and varied terrain: from the golden dunes of Dunhuang, to the brick-red rock formations of Turpan, to the glacial peaks and teal waters of the Tian Shan. This music theatre work weaves together sound, movement, color, and image to evoke the mesmerizing journey of the Silk Road through time — camels moving in slow procession across an endless desert; musicians and dancers in formation during the flourishing Tang Dynasty; sheer mountain crags casting long shadows over weary pilgrims. Throughout, image echoes nature: heat shimmers above the scorched Turpan valley; cold rain falls hard on distant peaks and finds its way, at last, into a still and quiet lake.
