Transformation (2023) Video click to watch This work began with Vivian Ting's research into the shifting landscape of a particular corner of Hong Kong across time. A collection of postcards documenting these changes became the seed of a wider inquiry — into the city's development, and into the legends and myths layered beneath it. From this shared foundation, the three collaborators developed a triangular, reiterative creative process in which each discipline continuously informed and reshaped the others. Wong Sin Han created an initial animation that sparked both the musical composition and a series of prose works. The music in turn shaped the animation's pacing and texture; a character from the prose deepened its narrative; and throughout, music and writing moved in dialogue, gradually settling into a shared tone for the final work. The result is an invitation to encounter a familiar place differently — to hold its visible transformation alongside the stories that history does not always surface. The contemporary world is full of subtle battlefields, and we all stroll along through their midst to a lesser or greater degree. The struggles are both personal and relevant to a greater outside world. They make us feel hopeless and insecure physically, psychologically, spiritually, often all of the above. It is, in fact, worse when we legitimize our feelings of invulnerability and open way for the Boiling Frog strategy to be easily used on us in an effective way. After a while, we surrender voluntarily before realizing the potential damage. BATTLE is a music theater expressing through irony the dilemmas and challenges that surround each one of us in the current era. Flight Mode (2018) Fixed Media, live DAW DEVELOPED BY DUMASTAR IMG-20181104-WA0013 Describe your image 1/5 Flight Mode was staged on Sha Lo Wan Island — the only shoreline in Hong Kong running parallel to an airport runway. In this site-specific dance performance, music and movement unfolded in dialogue with live air traffic: each takeoff and landing a structural beat, each aircraft a collaborator. As the sun set over the water, the work drew together nature, the body, and technology into a single sustained image. Echo (2015) Music Theater Read More click to watch Enduring hardship, hunger, and thirst, travelers throughout history have nonetheless been captivated by the breathtaking landscapes of the Silk Road. These vivid, storied lands bore witness to — and inspired — the rich exchange of Eastern and Western cultures. Across these sweeping vistas, religions, arts, and the traditions of many peoples flowed, mingled, and transformed one another. Echo is a reflection of that vast and varied terrain: from the golden dunes of Dunhuang, to the brick-red rock formations of Turpan, to the glacial peaks and teal waters of the Tian Shan. This music theatre work weaves together sound, movement, color, and image to evoke the mesmerizing journey of the Silk Road through time ; camels moving in slow procession across an endless desert; musicians and dancers in formation during the flourishing Tang Dynasty; sheer mountain crags casting long shadows over weary pilgrims. Throughout, image echoes nature: heat shimmers above the scorched Turpan valley; cold rain falls hard on distant peaks and finds its way, at last, into a still and quiet lake. Halika Dito (2014) Music Theater , Kulintang Ensemble click to watch Halika Dito — "Come here" in Filipino — tells the story of a woman waiting for her husband to return, lost somewhere in the wilderness of the modern city. Rooted in the feminine tradition of the Kulintang, a gong instrument long associated with women in Filipino culture, the work holds her longing at its centre: patient, insistent, and quietly fierce. The dancer embodies this waiting in the body. Behind her, a storybook world of vivid, painterly imagery unfolds in projection, conjuring the fractured pace of urban life from which her husband has not returned. The Gandingan — the speaking gong, whose tones imitate the cadences of the Maguindanao language — carries the work's recurring theme like a call that cannot stop itself: Come here, come here, I am waiting for you. Halika Dito is a music theatre work for dancer, Kulintang gongs, Gandingan, big gong, drums, violin, and bassoon, with a polyphonic performance score. The Gandingan weaves through the work as ostinato while the violin and bassoon erupt around it, voicing the rawness of grief and desire. The Kulintang, big gong, and drums ground the piece in its Asian sonic roots, binding these threads into a fusion that is at once intimate and expansive. Pairs (2025 Nov) The exercise starts by looking down: shoes first, always shoes ... guessing who might be inside them. age, job, intention, a small story invented too quickly. Then the guessing softens into observing: who is wearing what, At this moment, in this place? Is there a trace to follow, or only a trend passing through? Sneakers in a performing arts theatre, leather shoes strolling through a park. and when there is a lot to walk— a march, a tourist route, an airport, on a bus... distance insisting on the body— What do they choose then? It turns out it isn’t really about where or when, It’s about who. The attention drops again, from shoes to walking. how they move, how they hesitate. one pair becomes two people, Four shoes negotiating a rhythm. some steps rush, some slow, some soles still stiff and new, others worn into knowing each other for a very long time. on and on it goes. listen to this step Who do you think it is? and then, quietly, These shoes start to remind me of where I was, and where I am now, step by step. Cumulus (2024) Electroacoustic, Ensemble click to watch Cumulus began as a response to a Chinese ink painting — an attempt to translate into sound the quality of brushwork that moves freely across space, lands where it chooses, and finds meaning in the encounter rather than the plan. The music explores space and freedom: notes that fly, settle briefly against another timbre or colour, hold for a moment, and move again. Like ink on paper, nothing is forced into place. The score was selected by the Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble, who brought their own choreographic and visual collaborators to the work independently. What emerged is a different kind of collaboration — one where each artist contributed their full creative autonomy rather than a shared compromise. The result is a chemistry that only arises when no one is trying to control the whole. Composed by Priscila Chu Visual art by Krista M.
